Discover Waimea Valley (again)!

Visit Waimea Valley. A day trip for all ages.

By Kate Perry November 23, 2021

If you haven't taken a family hike to Waimea Falls yet, it's a must do for all ages. I have lived here on Oahu for years and never did the hike back into the valley because I was told it was "too tourist-y". I heard the stories and saw pictures of when my parents were younger and could go up there by themselves and cliff jump until their heart's content. Well, it's not exactly a path less traveled these days, but  I've now been doing it whenever mainland family visit or my kiddos just want to go for a dip in a waterfall. (It's the easiest way to get that experience in btw).

If you have kids, especially kids of different ages, it is the perfect easy hike to spend some time in nature. The paved path has a quite a few side paths that are still open to check out some of the replica Ancient Hawaiian structures and beautiful fauna. Some off the main path areas are still off limits, but you can still spend as long or as little exploring this beautiful valley. It's true the crowds are back, but seemingly manageable (for the time being) and the Valley has really improved it's amenities in the past year adding a coffee bar and adult drink bar.

Oh yeah and we typcally see no less than 2 peacocks roaming around; usually guarding the initial restrooms : )

My kids in particular like to stop to play the ancient Hawaiian games set up along the route. The valley has added an eager volunteer to explain them or answer any questions. These very simple games are enjoyable for any age. (especially if your young one likes to throw things : )

If you catch it on special days or schedule an educational field trip, there are native Hawaiian heritage experts to show how tapa is made and explain some ancient tools/weapons. The cultural sights attempt to give a glimpse into ancient Hawai'i are listed here. Waimea Valley

There are mulitple beautiful picture opportunities along the way, and lastly, a small gift shop and food shack towards the end of the path. The waterfall is open for swimming, but be aware, all swimmers must wear a lifejacket (provided) while the lifeguards on duty are there to ensure safety (and no one comes within 10 feet of the rock wall to climb: )

Overall, Waimea Valley is a must see treasure for your local ohana or families visiting Oahu.
